Biography
Joseph Haydn was an Austrian composer and one of the most influential figures of the Classical period. Often called the “Father of the Symphony” and the “Father of the String Quartet,” he helped establish the formal structures that would define Western classical music.
He spent much of his career in the service of the Esterházy family, where relative isolation allowed him to develop a highly original musical language. His works are characterized by clarity, balance, humor, and inventive development.
Later in life, his visits to London brought him international fame and inspired some of his most celebrated symphonies. Haydn also played a crucial role as a teacher and mentor, most notably to Beethoven.
